Herd Racing hit a home run when Karen LeGrand joined the team as it’s hospitality coordinator in 2011. Why, you might ask? Because the growing tunnel boat crew, team sponsors and guests like to eat on race weekends, and one thing Karen can surely do well is cook!
Karen has been married to Herd Racing crew member Roger LeGrand for 34 years and has been a fan of racing for nearly as long. Whether it be Mark Martin is his heyday behind the wheel of the Valvoline #6 for Roush Racing in NASCAR’s former Winston Cup Series or her own involvement in Herd Racing’s NASCAR and tunnel boat efforts in recent years, Karen enjoys combining her favorite past times of racing and catering like no other.
“I have known Karen almost my whole adult life and have been eating her cooking just as long,” says Herd Racing pilot Dana Tomes. “I have been able to enjoy a lot of Karen’s good recipes over the years and you can tell by looking at me that I haven’t been disappointed with one of them yet.”
But racing and cooking isn’t all that Karen is about. While attempting to keep her husband on the straight and narrow for going on four decades now, she also is a mother of one son, Andy, age 31, and has a grandson, Austin, age 11. Karen also cares for the family’s dog, Jack, age 2, as well as hold down a full time career.
"I have always loved to cook and entertain so assuming the role of hospitality coordinator was the perfect place for me at Herd Racing,” Karen says. “I enjoy meeting the public at the race venues and promoting Herd Racing, Marshall University and powerboat racing. Last season, I only had the opportunity to attend just a few of Herd Racing's outreach events. With Roger's retirement this year we will be able to participate the entire race season. I am really excited to be a part of the outreach program and Herd Racing."
For the past 36 years Karen has worked in the medical field, the last 25 as the office manager for a thriving urology practice in Huntington, WV, and most recently as the office manager of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards Medical School’s Department of Surgery, Division of Urology.
If that weren’t enough, Karen also finds time to enjoy herself as an avid genealogist, enjoys Civil War history and re-enacting, as well as searching for and collecting antiques. No, that’s not how she found Roger, although he is arguably the oldest and most valuable piece in her collection.
We would like to welcome Karen LeGrand to the staff at Herd Racing, where thanks to her, good friends and good cooking are two things we can all look forward to enjoying in 2012!
